The case for aluminium

Why UK boaters are switching.

Fibreglass has dominated the UK leisure market for years. Aluminium offers a different type of ownership — tougher, more practical and lower-maintenance.

Our boats are built from marine-grade aluminium alloy 5083-H116 — the same material used in commercial workboats and military vessels worldwide. Hull plates up to 5mm thick. Built to take knocks, beach landings, shingle slipways and rough Channel conditions.

Because aluminium doesn't osmose, blister or need gelcoat maintenance, your long-term ownership costs are significantly lower than a comparable fibreglass boat. Less money spent on maintenance. More time on the water.

FAQ

Questions about aluminium boats.

Are aluminium boats better than fibreglass?
For practical UK fishing and coastal use, aluminium offers significant advantages — no osmosis, lower maintenance, impact resistance and longer lifespan. For polished leisure cruising where comfort and finish are the priority, fibreglass may still suit some buyers better. See our full comparison page.
Are aluminium boats good for saltwater?
Yes. Marine-grade aluminium alloy 5083-H116 is specifically formulated for saltwater environments and is used in commercial and military marine applications worldwide. Proper maintenance including rinse-down after use is recommended, as with any boat.
Do aluminium boats need less maintenance?
Significantly less than fibreglass in terms of hull maintenance. No osmosis treatment, no gelcoat repairs, no hull polishing. The hull itself requires little beyond regular washing. Anodes should be checked and replaced as needed.
Can aluminium boats be repaired?
Yes — aluminium can be welded and repaired by any competent marine engineer or fabricator without specialist moulds or materials. This makes repairs both cheaper and more accessible than fibreglass.
How long do aluminium boats last?
With proper care, aluminium boats routinely achieve 40–50+ years of service life. Many commercial aluminium workboats remain in operation after decades of hard use. This typically exceeds the practical lifespan of fibreglass equivalents.
